Teacher confidence - music

A lot of teachers associate being musical with this picture - the full on elite, extremely talented, musicians of the media, and this impacts on confidence.
However, Lamont, Daubney and Spruce disagree with this. Their report on good practice in music education found that best practice was not always found with the best musicans, enthusiam was more important for a drive to deliver the best music curriculum.
A lot of teachers are not confident with their musical knowledge, and the initial teacher training was criticised for the minimal delivery of subject knowledge. (Holden et all, 2006) which in turn impacts on teacher confidence. Unfortunately, subsequently this can affect children's engagement and learning in music.
So What:
With this in mind, it brings two aspects to the role of the teacher when teaching music. The enthusiam to make music fun, and the knowledge to be able to facilitate children's learning and musical progress. In addition, if teachers are not confident they will lose the class attention and behaviour will become problematic.
